Same or a different bird was low over Caton village at 10:30 heading W checking out gardens.

Of interest, an out of area Green Hairstreak was in a Brookhouse garden yesterday.

Great records of Beautiful Demoiselle in North Lancs. A species I haven’t seen locally. A scarce insect in these parts but no doubt spreading. Reasonable numbers in South Cumbria and I have seen then near Meathrop Moss and within the Lake District itself.

Re: Visiting later for Hawfinch. I was there early morning a couple of years ago and had good views. I then walked to the new wetland area and back and by this time it was approaching 11am. I was quite amazed to pick up two birds in the hedge/shelter belt behind the feeding area. The car park was pretty full and noisy at that point! Regards Steve

              Hi Dave

              Thanks for that.

Both in the winter of 2021 & 2022 the Tree Sparrows completely disappeared but in spring 2022 returned in late Feb. I suspect they moved to coastal stubble fields even though I feed year round.

It will be interesting to see if any post breeding birds turn up in the summer.

              Regards

                Hi Alan

Only just seen your post as I rarely visit the discussion page. I erected a box a few years ago at the Crook O’ Lune and can confirm breeding has been successful there every year including this year. I don’t know how many young fledged this year though.

                Regards

Really pleased after a pair first seen in spring and a family party in summer currently have flock of 20 birds along with similar numbers of House Sparrows.

                                        October 15th

A beautiful crisp classic October day at LM. As expected the Beardies were performing well. Around 20 noted along the Causeway with a male feeding on the reed heads within 6 feet of the track. Of note at one point there were 6 birds, 2 males and 4 females/juvs on the grit trays. All six birds were unringed.

A taste of Autumn with returning Siskins and Goldcrests on the track to Lower Hide along with 2 flyover Redpolls.

6 Cetti’s Warblers in song around the reserve and 2 Chiffchaffs on the saltmarsh track. One briefly in full song.

2 Red Admiral, 1 Migrant Hawker, 3 Common Darters noted.

Earlier than my visit 3 Otters and Spoonbill noted at Lower Hide.

An excellent day out in the diminishing days of sunshine!

                                        Cheers

I would just like to echo Jeff’s comments.

Despite not being able to make many of these outings, life still pretty chaotic at the moment. Hence my pausity in sighting reports recently! They have been very well received and are drawing new people and hopefully members into the group.

Thanks to Dan and the rest of the Committee for no doubt re-igniting interest for seasoned birders and encouraging beginners on the quality and variety of local birding available.

                                            Well done.

Had around 10 birds screaming over Halton on the evening of 10/8.

Unusual for me as I see very few birds, particularly inland, after 1 Aug normally. Then again what is normal anymore!

                                                  Hi Eddy

It is known of males killing offspring to take over a nest site from a more subordinate male. So that maybe what you have unwittingly witnessed. If the dead youngsters looked healthy and there isn’t a food shortage or predation that is a strong possibility.
