I saw a flock of 14 fly N over Lancaster yesterday.

This is really interesting – where are they going??

That’s really interesting Barrie, I had a very similar bird near my garden back home in Durham in autumn 2020. It gave several rather ‘straight’ calls but since I’ve never seen/heard tristis-type chiffchaffs before, I could never be 100% sure. I’m aware there’s considerable numbers wintering in the UK now, but I’m not sure what (if anything) clinches the ID. Anyone know?

Quick trip to Gait Barrows again this morning yielded 5 Hawfinches, 2 just S of Hawes Water and 3 near Coldwell Farm. It’s really nice to be able to see them without much trouble.

21 in a similar spot this morning, in the farmer’s field just N of the Lane (drinking from the flooded pool), and then in the field by Sambo’s grave. Lovely views.
