in reply to: Otter in Bare #4459
Hi Jeff,
I saw an otter in the deculverted section of Burrow Beck at Hala Square in September 2020.
Burrow Beck provides a direct route to the canal and the estuary, which might explain how it found its way to Hala.Guy
in reply to: Fairfield Bramblings #4218I had 4 fly over Hala when the redwings first arrived. I’ve just had a look at Fair Isle Bird Obs and there aren’t many fieldfares passing through there. Fieldfare:redwing ratio 3:534 and 7:968 on the 25/26th October.
in reply to: Conder & Glasson #3825Thanks Ian about recording the GBBGs. I recorded one flying over my house at Hala on Saturday, so it might have been one of the GBBGs that you sighted. Are they regular at Blea Tarn?
in reply to: Canalside Cetti’s #3422There are 2, but possibly 3 Cetti’s on this stretch. The original Mr. Atkins was calling in the thicket close to where the footpath from Ashton Rd. meets the towpath. There was another Mr. Atkins singing on the opposite side of the canal opposite to the moored boats, 200m north. A third bird was heard calling about 70m north of Mr. Atkins. This was either Mr. Atkins or a third bird.

in reply to: Canalside Cetti’s #3372I have edited down the size of the video, hopefully this will work.

Lesser whitethroat close by.in reply to: Sunderland Point Lades Marsh WeBS Count #3031Hi Alan,
I have wanted to reply to this but I haven’t been able to log on until recently. I live in Hala and curlew and lapsing are commonly mimicked by starlings. I have also heard oystercatcher, buzzard and BHG. For the last two years, a starling has sat on my roof and it interrupts its song with mallard quacks. You look up expecting to see a female mallard with a couple of male attendants, but it is the starling.
in reply to: Pasture Lane, Bolton-le-Sands, today. #2254Hi Allan,
I had a water rail in the same area in about 1985. I don’t have a written record, but like you, the unusual nature of the venue of the record has meant that it is stuck in my memory.

in reply to: Blackcap in Lancaster garden #19812 females seen in my garden in Hala, one attempted the fatball feeder but both seemed happier on the apples spiked on the hawthorn bush. One was feeding in the half light until 1625.
in reply to: Aldcliffe Marsh #1643A female merlin was seen on the western edge of the stubble field.
