in reply to: Canal kingfisher #7995
Some years ago when we used to do WEBS for that stretch, we used to reckon the kingfishers came for the winter when the rivers got a bit rough, but canal banks are often very compacted so river banks can be better for breeding season.

in reply to: Blackwits in Morecambe #5038Something wrong this morning. I have tried posting this from my phone twice and it has not appeared on the website. I’ll try from my computer.
I had 470 black-tailed godwits near Scalestones on Thursday morning (24th) about 10 am. I assumed migration.
(in 2020 on 26th I had c250.)

in reply to: Breeding bird declines along the Lune #4978It’s interesting to see the facts, Jean. Whenever we go out we say there are less birds than there used to be but I have not checked evidence in this way, so that’s just anecdotal.

in reply to: Happy Mount Park #4964This morning a pair of sparrowhawks was displaying as they soared above the Park – but they don’t nest in the park.
Long-tailed tit exploring area where they usually nest.

in reply to: Notice of Jim Shepherd’s funeral #4930Sorry to hear of Jim’s death. He has been such a fixture in local birding for so long – he always seemed to be where we turned up – we shall miss him.
Sorry we can’t attend the funeral.

in reply to: Dockacres& Eric Morecambe & Brambling #4653In the menu bar at the top of the page there is LDBWS Area Map. If you click on that and then use the box at the top right of the map to expand it to full page, you should get a list on the left-hand side which relates to the numbers on the map. This covers the main sites.
As always, everyone has a pet name for an area, and local names change all the time, so names used do not always appear on the map.

Jeff Bin reply to: Otter in Bare #4460Yes Guy, I worked out it’s a bit over a mile from Raikes Head Bridge on the canal, down the lane to the start of the becks that form Bare Beck and then along to Pinewood Avenue. I wonder where it was going from there? I assume this is just a wandering young animal.
