Hi Jon, I would try The Vincent Wildlife Trust. They are a mammal conservation organisation and specialise in Pine Martens. I don’t have a personal contact but their website should direct you.

Sorry, had to reduce file size again for the site to accept photo. Was the new website supposed to take higher resolution photos?

Like myself, others had commented on the scarcity of Goldcrests at garden feeders and the assumption they were 100% insectivorous but I have had one again today that was feeding voraciously on fat balls. Whilst the serious bird books/sites refer to them as solely eating insects and spiders there are forums where people say that fat is a good inducement to them in severe weather. So today I paid particular attention and managed some poor shots through the window and the general mirk outside and it was definitely eating the fat.
My regular Blackcap though has eaten lots of fat and a huge amount of seed….no wonder it’s fat!

male Blackcap 6th consecutive day, feeding on both fat-ball and sunflower hearts.
2 male Bullfinch and one female today and most days.
Greenfinch now regular but only a couple of birds together, some recovery from trichomonosis apparent.
Treesparrow seen today and reasonably regular but these are first in 16 years in my garden.
Blue Tits, LT Tits and Coal Tits regular but the latter nothing like the quantity there was prior to Xmas
              Nuthatch on feeder today

Interesting point Steve, I’ll look more closely if I get it back again.

male Blackcap back again and a record (for my garden) of 9 LT Tits at one time on seeds and adjacent fat balls.

Another Blackcap, female in garden on Stankelt Rd, Silverdale today.

Indeed Dan,I don’t think I’ve had a Goldcrest on the feeders before, despite seeing them regularly in some Yews that border our garden. Today the bird was at the fat balls, on the feeder itself and on the seed tray….it was clearly determined.

Exactly the same with me John. Our garden feeders in Silverdale were overrun with Coal Tits a few weeks ago and now hardly any. Perhaps they are locating the hundreds of seeds they were caching in the ground. Why is it they seem to be the species most inclined to do this?
In fairness it’s not just the Coal Tits that have deserted us – we are getting very few birds on the feeders.

                        Hi Jim,

This is the first photo I’ve posted myself on the new site (the ones on the main site were put on by the administrators) and tried several times last night to sort it but to no avail. I understood from the initial briefing about the site that full resolution photos would be OK but tried that and then reducing the res. Can anyone help?

                        David

2 in my garden in Silverdale twice in the last week – the first ever in 16 years in this house. Also a male House Sparrow, only the second in all those years.
