Thanks for the excellent directions for viewing the Brown Hairstreaks – visited yesterday, and had great views of a male BH on the Hemp Agrimony, plus a brief showing by one other (sex undetermined) at the steep edge overlooking Arnside Tower. Very little else, though – a Peacock, also on the H.A, a couple of Speckled Woods, and a Meadow Brown. No sign of Scotch Argus, which used to fly here – I believe they are still on the wing at Smardale.

And this morning, more House Martins, finally inspecting the new nest boxes we erected two years ago!
I wonder if they have been around for a while, fattening up after migration, before starting to breed – or whether they are fresh arrivals?

I tried to reply, but apparently failed – no idea why!
Travelling from the top road from Caton, turn off left down low Fell Lane; just after the junction with Stock-a-Beck lane, (coming up from the left), it was the next field on the left.
Not easy to pick out – I missed them, but another birder kindly pointed one out to me among the sheep. The other was hidden in the short grass.

2 Whimbrel in the next field along, this afternoon at 4pm

Back again today, feeding eagerly for long periods – but there’s nothing obvious on the bush!

More swifts over this evening – travelling in the same direction, but at higher altitude tonight.

Nice photo – just a thought, don’t chiff-chaffs normally have dark legs? Those look quite pale…
