We had a rare 4 hours free today and I’d been in Morecambe as well as at Torrisholme yesterday. Took a trip around the much improved and very wheelchair accessible Meathop site…huge round of applause for the boardwalks, hides and feeding stations since I was last there several years ago…then went to a site near Witherslack where (I now regret) I used to dig peat to burn 40 years ago. Much overgrown but being well coppiced. In 24 hours without going out of the way, we clocked 89 species with the most notable short eared owl, green woodpecker, a jay outing a tawny owl assisted by jackdaws and a cat, and finally redpoll spp . No sign of a brambling amongst the many chaffinches at the Meathop feeders unfortunately. No peregrine and no harriers either today.
