A not particularly birdy friend reported to me that ‘several’ Lapwings bred in the maize stubble adjacent to the canal and Kellet Lane (circa SD 520 711) this year.

I wonder if anyone can help us with putting a count (number of pairs) to this record and also let us know if they had any breeding success there.

Our lowland Lapwings are in a parlous state and their predilection for maize land isn’t helping! So it would be good to have more info on this.

Similarly I saw 3 pairs of Lapwings holding territory in maize stubble just N of Galgate (Highland Brow) April 1st 2022 but have no further info. I was away for much of the spring and early summer so didn’t see how they fared.

With my bitter experiences with the dwindling maize-nesting Lapwing population at Aldcliffe I wonder if anyone is interested in founding an LDBWS-led ‘Maize-nesting Lapwing Protection Team’ where we might engage with landowners and try to help with the peewit plight? Any takers?
