The two pairs of Osprey on the reserve have both produced young.
The Westmorland Gazette reports :”Osprey chicks have hatched at not one, but two nests at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve near Witherslack.

The long-standing breeding pair, White YW and Blue 35, returned to the nest in March and laid three eggs, which hatched in May.

Soon after, a second pair of ospreys, Blue 476 and Blue 717, set up home at another nest on the nature reserve and laid three eggs. Three chicks hatched this week, but sadly one was lost. Osprey volunteers think there’s a chance one was accidentally carried off the nest by the male, Blue 476. The camera showed he had a clump of nesting material caught in his talons. However, the two remaining chicks are looking strong and seem to be doing well.”

Visited to day. The new pair are much easier to see than the older established couple.
A young Greenfinch was being fed by a parent at the feeders. A male Siskin appeared there too.
A Reed Warbler was heard at Meathop Moss.

The second pair of Ospreys are male Blue 476 hatched 2021 from a private site in the Lakes and female Blue 717 who hatched in 2022 near Cupar in Fife.

Sadly we’ve lost another chick on that nest. It seemed to become ill and then expired. Fingers crossed for the third. On the plus side, the pair are now established and attached to the site, so it bodes well for the future.
