If you would like to document recreational disturbance of birds in coastal / estuarine parts of our district please add them to the website in a format similar to the above.
I will then forward them to Mandy Knott– the Coastal Lead Adviser for Morecambe Bay, Wyre and Lune Estuaries for
Natural England. Mandy is keen to receive them and factor them into plans for minimizing recreational disturbance.Almost an exact repeat event involving single jet skier around 12.30 pm today (Sunday) with geese disturbed again.
Cheers Jon. Roughly how many geese were displaced?
*Recreational Disturbance Event:
Time and Date: 1630 21/3/22
Site: Conder Green
Form of disturbance: single dog walker with one dog
Birds seen to be disturbed / description of disturbance: 60 Wigeon, 4 Avocets, 4 Shelduck, 10+ Redshank, 2+ Oystercatchers forced to take flight when dog walker (having accessed saltmarsh from Glasson) reached edge of Conder creek at SD454561 Wigeon were displaced c800m. The dog was off-lead but not out of control– indicating that mere presence at such sensitive spots (well away from public rights of way) is enough to create problems.
*Recreational Disturbance Event:
Time and Date: 12.15 22/3/22
Site: Conder Green
Form of disturbance: Morecambe Bay Rescue hovercraft
Birds seen to be disturbed / description of disturbance: A few hundred Knot, Bar-tailed and Black-tailed Godwit, other waders, gulls and wildfowl. The hovercraft flushed all the waders as they were gathering to roost during the rising tide. The birds could not return to the roost site because the hovercraft stationed itself at the roost site for several minutes forcing the birds to fly around in search of a roos site. The hovercraft eventually proceeded back up the River Lune probably to disturb other birds roosting up there. Totally unbelievable and irresponsible. What the hell are they doing?
