An excellent walk in lovely winter sunshine. As expected, the upland section was very quiet with a single Grouse calling. However, at least 2 male Stonechats were braving the frosty conditions.
Other birds seen ascending and descending from Brookhouse were: Several vocal Jays at least 6 around, c20 Redwing, single Fieldfare in a Starling feeding flock and a single Mistle Thrush.
A well stocked feeding station in a small copse adjacent to Quarry House Farm on Quarry Road was attracting plenty of Finches including over 20 Chaffinch. I was just thinking this was the sort of place an odd Brambling might turn up but none seen.
However, lower down the road another small copse of mainly Beech trees produced a cracking male Brambling. A bird I rarely see in these parts and on my new garden wanted list!
If the wintery forecast materialises well worth a look. Beware the road is icy in places.
Happy New Year and prosperous birding in 2025.
