Counted c.100 Pied Wagtails at the roost in the centre of Lancaster at 16.45 yesterday once the birds appeared to have settled. The roost is in two trees on Horse Shoe Corner (corner of Market Street and Cheapside). By far the majority of the birds (c.90) were in the tree in front of the Cumberland Building Society. At 16.25, after the first eight or nine wagtails had landed, a Sparrowhawk streaked through, coming from the direction of St. Nicholas Arcade, and apparently caught one. It was glimpsed on the adjacent rooftop, hunched and stabbing, before flying off.
