Nick Godden and me have been liaising with the Fairfield Association about developing a farmland bird feeding station on their land. We are now pleased to have been given the go-ahead for a society driven project that will benefit the birds, the wider community and the club itself.

It’s likely that the site will be at SD467605 at the edge of the stubble field near Pony Wood. https://gridreferencefinder.com?gr=SD4675360526|Point_s_B|1&t=Point%20B&v=r
The field has been farmed for wildlife for a number of years and we’re hoping to build on this good work, which has already resulted in an increase of farmland bird species in winter- particularly Linnet, Reed Bunting and Stock Dove.

Fellow society member Alan Draper has kindly built a custom bird table for us- low, open and fairly large in an effort to attract species that feed on or close to the ground. We are hoping to install the table this weekend, and that it will provide members and other nature lovers with close views of the kind of species that the stubble and wildflower margins have been attracting.

I’ve bought an initial batch of seed (sunflower, millet, niger and hemp) and it will be interesting to see which of these (if any!) is preferred.

We are looking for a team of interested parties to help us keep the station stocked with food, monitor the birds using it and also to help raise funds for seed. If you would like to get involved please add to the thread below or email [email protected]

Chaffinches, Lesser Redpoll, Goldfinches and Stock Doves couldn’t wait to get stuck in….but not while we were watching! Please let us know if you see signs of success. It’s viewable from the Long Pads / Pig Lane (SD467605) footpath to the west of Pony Wood.

If you’re walking out of Lancaster along the Aldcliffe Rd stretch of the canal, turn left at the Kingfisher.

Since being ‘installed’ at midday, a friend reports that the table has already received its first avian visitor.

Can anybody guess the species of the early adopter?
