Binocular cleaning
I have an old pair of Wray 11x60 binoculars circa 1960. Dust has accumulated on the inside of the objective lenses (and probably elsewhere). They are usable but I am keen to have these cleaned - a search on the Internet reveals a number of specialists but I would be grateful for any recommendations.
Thank you

Having looked at 1.5 Robins through a local birders optics yesterday, Daniel, are they still collimated after all these years? I would go for a new more lightweight pair via Lamberts/Leighton Moss etc. - see what yours are worth as 'antique' value on ebay?? I assume yours are pretty heavy and there is a danger with heavy binoculars to see the use as occasional i.e. deliberate birding, rather than a lightweight pair being ('unnoticed') round your neck every time you are out.......just in case an Osprey flies over (see Jon's posting)

Hi Pete and thank you for your contribution. Yes they are indeed heavy and I do have a lighter modern pair of binoculars for everyday use. I'm thinking that when cleaned the 60mm objectives should offer better light transmission for those dull days when observing from a hide. I am assured that the collimation is fine and I can see no problems with this. I am considering that if I can get them cleaned without great expense then they will be worth using or as you suggest e-bay. Thanks

Hi Daniel
I think you will find the magnification is a bit 'in between' for most hides eg 20x wide angle on a scope would be better or a zoom to accompany your lightweight bins. Think distant wader on em pool or diving duck at back of Lilian's hide

Best regards

Pete

Ask Alan Stamford or one of lm staff involved in optics for local cleaning advice

Thank you again; I'm beginning to re think my options and perhaps having these cleaned isn't the way to go.
