Weather & Breeding.

Despite seeing a full brood of six Stonechats today on Harrisend I would predict a poor breeding season this year as far as the Stonechat is concerned. Though I am not aware of the true reading, the temperature on this fell today could not possibly have gone beyond the mid fifties, and was more reminiscent of early March than 6 July and with May the coldest for some time the signs are not good as I see it.

Prior to todays six, the maximum number of juvenile seen together has been two, not good for a species that 'can' produce eighteen birds in a season.

I have had no evidence of more than a 'few' juvenile Stonechats so far this summer at several locations I visit.
