Winter thrushes

Winter thrushes

Monday, Tuesday and now Wednesday mornings at first light and up to 9am have seen movements of mostly Redwing heading firmly NE over Lancaster. Without actually standing observing I'd estimate several hundred birds each day in flights of 15 to 50.

Before dawn and after sunset we've had up to 7 blackbirds on our back lawn. These are presumably continental in origin and weren't there last week.

This morning and not too many miles north east of you we counted over 3800 mixed Fieldfare and Redwing in four hours. Flocks numbering up to 500 mixed heading south east. All of the birds arrived from your direction or east of it.

It's interesting that as we watched the huge numbers, Bryan Yorke at Burton in Kendal had very low counts
