Swifts, Freehold

Swifts, Freehold

There are two obvious colonies of swifts in Freehold, one focussed on the SE area around Derwent and Windermere Rd and the other on the junction of Borrowdale and Ullswater Rd to the NW.

The SE Colony around Derwent Road has around 11 birds associated with breeding and at least 6 nest sites have been identified. The non breeding portion of the colony is now with us in full strength taking the population to around 22-25 birds. The latter are chasing and screaming and investigating potential nesting sites often in screaming chains. The weather is perfect this week for checking swifts in your town or village up to 10.30pm or later. All records on the website appreciated, even if it is just numbers. Nest sites identified are useful too.

If the weather holds everything indicates a successful breeding season and an early departure between 3rd and 10th August. Before that if skies are clear there should be some very decent displays of 40 plus birds before sunset.

An unusual gathering over Freehold last night where the traditional colonies 'broke down' about 8pm to produce a feeding group of 100-130 swifts and numerous gulls also. Presumably this was due to an ant flight. It lasted about 15 minutes and by 9pm everything was back to 'normal.'

Colony around Roseberry Avenue, Bowerham. There appears to be at least three nest sites on this road.
On Friday 6th July at 7.30 there is a talk on swifts by Tanya Hoare at St. Paul's church hall, Halton.
